Sustainable Agriculture

While conserving the forests and wildlife of the Gadoli and Manda Khal Fee Simple Estate is one of the prime focuses, our on-site project on Sustainable Farming with a no – go policy on the use of any form of chemicals in the production of our crops here ensure healthy farmland biodiversity with no chemicals entering the food web through our farming practices. Our farming practices follow traditional hill farming methods with local varieties of hill grain and a number of vegetables being grown to preserve traditional crop genetic diversity. The project employs local unemployed hill women folk for it’s farming practices so that they have a stronger economic voice in the running of their daily lives. The effects of this project on biodiversity are often seen in House Sparrow numbers here. A once common bird in urban and rural landscapes in India, it’s populations have been in steep decline due to the use of pesticides and chemicals in farming practices. Our traditional hill farming practices here have ensured healthy House Sparrow populations alongwith good populations of the Russet Sparrow too. Bees are also flourishing in the area. Just one of the examples of our conservation work beyond forests and wildlife.
